Initial temperature of Liquid /°C
Length of casting /cm
The
melting temperature of the metal is 650 oC, so the molten
metal cannot be poured into the mould at this temperature.
As the molten metal cools, ΔTint decreases,
and therefore the rate of cooling decreases.
On reaching the melting point the casting solidifies at
the mould wall and forms an air gap, due to the higher density of the
solid material.
The latent heat has to be removed from the casting for
it to fully solidify, by conduction through the air gap. The casting
will slowly approach the temperature of the mould but never actually
reach it.
