Shape Memory Effect
The Basics

The shape memory effect makes use of martensitic transformations to
display remarkable properties.
The metal is formed to a desired ;parent' shape and then heat treated,
this fixes the parent shape into the metals 'memory'.
Heat treatments vary depending on the exact alloy and its intended use but
for an equi-atomic NiTi alloy a typical treatment would be heating to 500°C
for 5 minutes then cooling at room temperature.

Screws are used to hold the coil in place. It is vital that the metal cannot move while being heat treated otherwise the required shape will not be set.
