Workshop aims

This Workshop aims to provide an opportunity to learn about and try out new web-based resources for teaching and learning Materials Science, developed by the DoITPoMS Project and MATTER.

Background

Recent years have seen increased emphasis on the use of the Web to disseminate flexible learning materials. The Web offers many advantages such as "anyone, anytime, anywhere" availability, and scope for collaboration between teachers and students.

Along with these advantages, there are issues to be considered in developing web-based resources, such as cost, quality expectations, and interoperability of resources.

Structure

The Workshop will consist of a mix of presentations, demonstrations and hands-on sessions with web-based teaching and learning resources. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion, including a plenary session.

Who should attend

The Workshop is intended for anyone involved in teaching Materials Science in HE, be it within a specialist department or in the context of another subject like Engineering. Those involved in developing web-based resources in other disciplines are also welcome to attend.

Registration

Sorry, this Workshop is now fully booked. We hope to organise a further Workshop in the autumn.

Contributors

DoITPoMS

The DoITPoMS Project is a FDTL Phase 3 consortium project which focuses on the use of the Web for the dissemination of teaching and learning resources for materials science. The project is led by the University of Cambridge in partnership with the Universities of Leeds, Manchester, North London, Oxford Brookes and Sheffield. Among the outcomes of the project are two new web-based resources aimed at supporting the teaching and learning of materials science: a Micrograph Library and a Library of Teaching and Learning Packages ( TLPs).

MATTER

MATTER, based at the University of Liverpool, was set up as a consortium of UK materials science departments in 1993 to develop and help integrate computer-based learning materials into mainstream teaching. It published Materials Science on CD-ROM in 1996, with a second version being released in 1998. Since then, MATTER has developed all new modules for the web. It is currently working with International partners to produce e-Learning resources in steel and aluminium science and technology. It is also helping lecturers deliver some of these resources via virtual learning environments (VLEs).

UK Centre for Materials Education

The UK Centre for Materials Education is one of the 24 subject centres established by the UK funding councils to support learning and teaching in higher education - the LTSN. UKCME thus provides help and support for all university staff involved in the teaching of materials. The Centre is based in Liverpool but runs activities all over the UK, including workshops on many topics. It maintains a database of teaching resources and sponsors a large number of projects in universities aimed at developing learning and teaching techniques.
