Micrograph and Video Libraries

The Micrograph and Video Libraries comprise images and videos created within the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge, or submitted to DoITPoMS by users of the resources. The libraries are intended for teaching and learning. Copies of the resources may be used for the following purposes, provided an acknowledgement is given:

  • lectures and presentations
  • computer aided learning materials, online tutorials, tests, homework, etc
  • educational web pages
  • other legitimate educational material

For full details of the copyright regulations see terms of use.

Teaching and Learning Packages (TLPs)

The DoITPoMS Teaching and Learning Packages (TLPs) are produced during the annual DoITPoMS summer school. Undergraduate students undertake a topic, and, together with a member of staff acting as a supervisor, produce a TLP. The student will generally develop the content of the TLP themselves, including images, videos and simulations, with input from their supervisor, as well as other students and members of staff. Some material from the micrograph and video libraries is also used.

The TLPs focus on a common materials science topic, met within undergraduate teaching and learning. The student producing the TLP will aim to cover the topic thoroughly, such that the package is self contained, and assumes little or no knowledge of the topic area with which it is concerned. As technology has progressed and animating software has become more accessible, the inclusion of animations and simulations has increased, such that one of the main aims is to produce medium to aid understanding that could not be gained from a textbook. This is done with the help of a specially appointed IT officer.
