Widmanstätten microstructure can be recognised by the 'basketweave'
appearance and is seen due to grain growth in preferred crystallographic
directions.
The alpha phase precipitates out of solid solution from
the beta phase. This example was cooled quickly in air as can be seen
from the Widmanstätten microstructure.

This micrograph is of a lower magnification than the sketch.
The 'basket-weave' microstructure is more obvious here. See also the
DoITPoMS
micrograph library entry.
