Shape Memory Effect
The Basics
The shape memory effect makes use of martensitic transformations
to
display remarkable properties.
The metal is formed to a desired ;parent' shape and then heat treated,
this fixes the parent shape into the metals 'memory'.
Heat treatments vary depending on the exact alloy and its
intended use but
for an equi-atomic NiTi alloy a typical treatment would be heating to
500°C
for 5 minutes then cooling at room temperature.
°C mins
Screws are used to hold the coil in place. It is vital
that the metal cannot move while being heat treated otherwise the required
shape will not be set.
