Tree bending demonstration
Not pre-stressed tree
Pre-stressed tree
The tree trunk is initially stress free.
Stress distribution across the trunk is linear. Maximum
tensile and compressive stresses are equal.
The outside of the trunk is in tension all around while
the inside is in compression.
Compressive stress is half that in a tree that is not pre-stressed,
so it can bend twice as far without breaking.
