An edge dislocation with Burgers vector b2 cuts through an edge dislocation with Burgers vector b1, which lies in the plane perpendicular to the plane of the moving dislocation.

The intersection produces a jog which is parallel to b2. Since the jog is part of the edge dislocation with Burgers vector b1, it has a length of b1. The jog has an edge orientation since its line vector (parallel to b2) is perpendicular to b1. The edge character of the jog allows it to glide with the rest of the dislocation and so the jog is glissile.
