- Brasses with greater than 40% zinc usually consist of b primary dendrites surrounded by a phase. The lack of such a microstructure in this sample indicates that the cooling rate during casting was sufficiently rapid that dendrites were unable to form and consequently the microstructure consists entirely of b phase.
