- Brief description
- Inter-particle bond in the fire-resistant composite Barrikade (R)
- Keywords
- Barrikade, composite material , edible, filler , fire resistant, thermal, vermiculite, ZnO
- Categories
- Composite
- System
- Barrikade
- Composition
- Expanded vermiculite, cured in ZnO and mixed with binder
- Standard codes
- Reaction
- The ZnO cure makes the system water-resistant
- Processing
- Exfoliated vermiculite particles are first mixed with a binder and ZnO, then cured at 100 degrees C. The treatment is then repeated with the particles pressed into a mould and dried.
- Applications
- Barrikade (r) is a light-weight, inexpensive, edible, space-filling composite which is water resistant. It also has moderate thermal conductivity and is fire-resistant, making it a suitable fire-retarding material.
- Sample preparation
- A sample has been mounted in resin and cross-sectioned.
- Technique
- Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in backscattered electron imaging (BEI) mode
- Length bar
- 100 μm
- Further information
- This cross-section shows a typical bond, made between the two expanded vermiculite particles by the water soluble glass (sodium silicate) which is used as a binder. The flow of the binder towards such necks is driven by surface tension.
