Processing
Made from china clay, bone which has been calcined to around 1000ºC, and stone, which undergo a complex series of reactions on firing to produce a new assemblage of crystals in a glassy matrix.
Applications
Crockery
Sample preparation
Thin section
Technique
Transmitted polarised light microscopy, with sensitive tint plate

250 μm
Further information
China clay consists mainly of SiO2 and Al2O3, and is valued for its whiteness (which is due to the low iron oxide content). Bone consists mainly of hydroxyapatite, Ca5(PO4)3OH, and the source supply is mainly ox bone.
