Micrograph 192 and full record
- Micrograph no
- 192
- Brief description
- Doloma, (Ca,Mg)O
- Keywords
- calcia, ceramic , doloma, lime , magnesia, periclase
- Categories
- Ceramic
- System
- (Ca,Mg)O
- Composition
- CaO 57, MgO 41 (wt%), + Fe2O3, SiO2 and Al2O3 (typical)
- Standard codes
- Reaction
- Processing
- Formed by calcining dolomite ore > 900ºC. CO2 is given off as the single-phase carbonate decomposes to form the two phase oxide ceramic.
- Applications
- Used as an additive to control slag basicity in steelmaking and in basic refractories.
- Sample preparation
- Polished and unetched.
- Technique
- Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in backscattered electron imaging (BEI) mode
- Length bar
- 30 μm
- Further information
- Note the two phase microstructure formed on calcining the single phase dolomite ore. The light continuous matrix is lime (CaO or calcia) while the dark isolated phase is periclase (MgO or magnesia).
