Flat glass is produced using the Float Glass Process. Samples were heated at 900°C for 17 hours to induce devitrification.

Further information
During the devitrification process, the glass changes from being completely amorphous to partially crystalline, as it adsorbs moisture from the atmosphere. Devitrified glass has a frosty or cloudy, iridescent appearance. Devitrification occurs naturally over long periods of time, but can be induced by heating to high temperatures for prolonged periods of time. Compare this micrograph with micrograph ID 543, which shows the same sample rotated through 45°.
