Categories

System
Barrikade
Composition
Expanded vermiculite, cured in ZnO and mixed with binder
Standard codes
Reaction
The ZnO cure makes the system water-resistant
Processing
Exfoliated vermiculite particles are first mixed with a binder and ZnO, then cured at 100 degrees C. The treatment is then repeated with the particles pressed into a mould and dried.
Applications
Barrikade (r) is a light-weight, inexpensive, edible, space-filling composite which is water resistant. It also has moderate thermal conductivity and is fire-resistant, making it a suitable fire-retarding material.
Sample preparation
A sample has been mounted in resin and cross-sectioned.
Technique
Photography (no microscope)
Length bar
10 mm
Further information
The concertina-like structure of the exfoliated vermiculite particles is clear. This configuration is set by the binder during the initial cure. This is then followed by a moulding operation and secondary, inter-particulate binding.
