- Micrograph no
- 633
- Brief description
- Cross-section of an aluminium foam slab produced by gas injection
- Keywords
- Alcan, alloy
, aluminium
, aluminium foam, cell
, composite foam, composite material
, foam
, gas, injection, metal
- Categories
- Foam, Metal or alloy, Metal or alloy composite foam
- System
- Al
- Composition
- Not specified
- Standard codes
- Reaction
- Processing
- The 'Alcan' gas injection process involves the injection of a gas into a melt via a rotating impeller or vibrating nozzle
- Applications
- Closed cell aluminium foams are an ultra-light material, with potential structural applications in transport and construction. They may also be used in energy absorbing structures and heat exchangers
- Sample preparation
- Technique
- Photography (no microscope)
- Length bar
- 10 mm
- Further information
- This is a continuous casting process which obviates foaming agents and the restrictions that they impose on temperature and processing time. However, molten metal drains through the structure due to gravitational forces and the resulting foam has a pronounced density gradient.
