Further information
Medium carbon steel containing a high proportion of nickel in order to stabilise the austenite to lower temperature. The steel has been quenched in order to produce martensite. Subsequently the steel has been tempered in order to allow the interstitially trapped carbon to diffuse out and consequently a reduction in hardness is observed.
